The government of West Bengal has started the “Kanyashree”  scheme for the upliftment of the girl child. It was launched by the honourable Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2013. Since then August 14 has been celebrated as “Kanyashree Divas”. The aim of this project is to help the girl children to continue their studies and stop early marriage. Unmarried girls aged between 13 and 18 years in government recognized schools will get an annual scholarship of Rs.750 for continuing their studies. Besides a one time grant of Rs.25000 will be given to the girls when they are 18 years old. A girl should remain unmarried and continue her study to get this grant. The dropout rate and early marriage of girls have been reduced for this scheme. The number of girls in schools has increased. The project was honoured by the United Nations on a competition of 552 projects from 63 countries. The “Kanyashree” scheme got the first position in that competition. It has won several national and international awards. Now it becomes “Biswashere” internationally.
