Environment means the soil, water, and air around us. The World Environment Day is observed on 5th June every year. We talk a lot about protecting our environment. But in practice, We damage it. Man exploits his environment to satisfy his greed. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “The earth has enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed.” But we have thrown these wise words to the winds. ‘No bird fouls

its nest’, goes a proverb. Man has plundered this planet for long, and now the planet is taking revenge. A breaking point has reached. Environment has become highly polluted due to the introduction of pollutants into the environment. It causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the physical systems. This pollution is broadly of four types. Air pollution is one of them.

Air pollution is the poisoning of air by harmful substances like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, lead, sulphur dioxide etc. Burning of fossil fuels like petrol, diesel, and wood produce most of these harmful gases. The chemicals, oil and fertilizer industries are more harmful, and contribute highly towards the air pollution. The factory chimneys and coke ovens emit smoke, toxic chemical fumes that pollute the air. Manufacturing pesticides is also a serious threat to human life. The Bhopal Gas leakage was an eye opener in this regard. Air pollution has worsened due to large scale deforestation. Nuclear experiments conducted by many nations aggravate air pollution. According to experts there has already been an increase of carbon dioxide in the air by 20%. Excessive presence of harmful gases in the air has caused global warming which has resulted in alarming climatic changes and contamination of the environment.

Air pollution damages our lungs. People suffer from a lot of respiratory diseases, headache, loss of appetite and so on. The very high concentration of sulphur dioxide causes harmful acid rain. Nitrogen dioxide retards the growth of vegetation.

Air supplies oxygen, cools the body and helps maintain body temperature. Clean air helps us to breathe properly. So pure air is a priceless necessity. It lies in our hands to conserve it. Of late, vehicles are being fitted with catalytic converters to check air pollution. Unleaded petrol is being used. Saplings are planted in every neighbourhood. But that is not enough. There should be a combined effort to trigger off an environmental awareness campaign. An awareness about the environment today can make all the difference tomorrow. Without environmental awareness and mass effort, a serious problem like air pollution can hardly be prevented.
